Seasonal Tips
Winter
- Help prevent and control pests that damage plants and cause sticky "honeydew"
to fall on cars, sidewalks and structures with an annual
Merit Injection.
- Turn off your backflow/mainline connection to the irrigation system to prevent
freezing.
- Dormant prune Crape Myrtles,
Japanese Maples, fruit trees, Roses, Hydrangeas, etc. to promote desirable new growth.
- Protect plants from frost by setting tree stakes around plants and then cover with
a bed sheet.
- Bermuda grass goes dormant in the cooler months and turns brown. We recommend turf
renovation in the summer.
- Apply pre-emergent to open soil areas and beds to help prevent the germination
of weeds.
- Apply pre-emergent to all lawn areas in late winter to help prevent the germination
of weeds and crabgrass.
Spring
- To provide optimal health, growth and color a
Deep Root Feed is recommended for trees, shrubs, ornamentals and blooming plant
material in March and November.
- An application of Fruit and Seed Prevention will greatly reduce the formation of
messy fruit or seed pods on Fruitless Pears, Fruitless Plums, Liquidambars, etc.
- Control outbreaks of Anthracnose with a preventative fungicide application. This
disease infects Ash and Sycamores during the spring and causes leaf drop and branch
dieback in the summer.
- Infestations of insects will start to occur in the spring. Inspect the back of
the plant leaves for insects and look for sticky residue. If insect activity is
suspected, chemical applications can provide control.
- Grubs eat grass roots causing lawn to die off and form brown patches. A
preventative application is recommended in April.
- An Irrigation Tune-up will help ensure the efficient use of your water.
- Aquatic Weed and Algae Control treatments reduce algae and aquatic weeds for an
attractive water area.
Summer
- Lawn aeration allows oxygen, water and nutrients easier access to grass roots,
creating a healthier lawn environment.
- If Bermuda is present in your lawn, start the process of a
turf renovation in late July by applying chemical applications to kill undesirable
lawn areas in preparation of reseeding or installation of sod.
- Nutsedge is a common sign of over watering. Applications of
post-emergent herbicide can help control nutsedge in the summer heat.
- Brown spots in a lawn don't always mean it is dry. It could be fungus. A trained
professional is able to diagnose and treat lawn fungus.
- Adjust your irrigation timer weekly depending on changing temperatures.
- Avoid a moist lawn environment and don't water at night to aide in the prevention
of fungus.
Fall
- To provide optimal health, growth and color a
Deep Root Feed is recommended for trees, shrubs, ornamentals and blooming plant
material in March and November.
- Aeration with overseed will help fill in thin and bare areas. We do not recommend
seeding in the spring due to the pre-emergent barrier. Late winter is the time to
apply pre-emergent barrier for weeds and crabgrass, but it will also prevent other
seeds from germinating.
- Clear your drains of leaves and debris to help prevent flooding.
- Prune trees in preparation for wind storms.
- Apply pre-emergent to open soil areas and beds to help prevent the germination
of weeds.
Protect your walkways, driveways, living areas and cars from this sticky problem.
